Responses From Our Neighbors

SAE occasionally interviews a couple of our neighbors.  Pick a questions, we say.

These are the choices:

1.  What does clean air mean to you?

2.  If you think we have poor air quality here, what do you think is causing it?

3.  Can you think of a significant experience you've had with exceptionally good or poor air quality?

4.  What do you think the state of our air quality will be here in the next 10 years?

5.  Do you have any suggestions for improving our air quality indoors and/or outdoors?

And here are our current NEXTBREATH responses:

ALEC, NORTH URBANA

Question #4:  I think we can make great progress in the next ten years to make our air clean. We just have to fight and hold the corporations accountable that are polluting our air. That is one thing my environmental organization Students for Environmental Concerns is trying to accomplish with our mission to get the University of Illinois System to divest from fossil fuel companies. Divestment is the process of pulling out investments in companies that are involved in the manufacturing, extraction, and transportation of fossil fuels. The idea of divestment is to remove the social license of these companies and to hold them accountable for the destruction they are doing to our air and planet as a whole. If we push back and fight we can make tremendous strides towards getting truly clean air.

Question #1:  Air pollution is a major threat to today's society.  Every day the rate of air pollution grows due to the release of a lot of harmful toxins. It is very crucial for a solution to be found to control the situation before it destroys our lives and whole atmosphere.  I believe some causes of pollutants in the area are industrial chemicals. Factories that should have never been built locally near neighborhoods and residents. There are parks and schools located just walking distances from places that release harmful toxins in the community. I am a parent of a young child and her health is very important to me. I do believe local companies need to be held accountable for the harm that has been caused to all properties and people involved.
